The Los Alamos Community Services District is seeking a reliable and hardworking Maintenance Field Worker to join our team. Maintenance Field Worker

The specific statements shown in each section of this description are not intended to be all-inclusive.  They represent typical elements and criteria necessary to successfully perform the job.

DEFINITION:

The Maintenance Field Worker is responsible for performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the operation, maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment facilities, water distribution systems and related infrastructure.  The role involves working outdoors in varying conditions, ensuring regulatory compliance and maintaining the reliability of water and wastewater services for the community.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a pre-entry level position in the operator grade series. Positions in this classification perform a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled and skilled tasks as experience and knowledge are obtained in the District’s operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDED, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs on wastewater treatment equipment, pumps, valves, pipes and other mechanical systems.

  • Supports and assists with inspections of water distribution infrastructure and wastewater systems to identify potential issues.

  • Assists in the installation and replacement of pipelines, meters and other waterworks equipment.

  • Operates and maintains tools and equipment, including hand tools, power tools and specialized machinery.

  • Assists to emergency service calls, such as pipeline leaks or mechanical failures, and takes corrective action under the supervision of the General Manager and/or the Lead Operator.

  • Performs general upkeep of facilities, including cleaning tanks, clearing debris and maintaining grounds.

  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics and technical manuals related to system maintenance and repairs.

  • Maintains accurate records and logs of maintenance activities and equipment performance.

  • Supports other team members and assists in training new employees as needed.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.

  2. Additional technical training or certifications in water/wastewater systems are preferred.

  3. Prior experience in utility maintenance, plumbing or construction-related work.

  4. Knowledge of mechanical equipment.

  5. Ability to operate heavy machinery and tools safely.

  6. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

As a condition of employment, is required to:

  1. Must meet all conditions set forth in the Employee Handbook under Section II, Introduction to Employment, Subsection D.- Requirements for Employment.

  2. Possess a valid and appropriate Class C Driver’s License and be insurable by the District’s vehicle insurance carrier.

  3. Be available to respond to after-hours emergencies within 30 (thirty) minutes or less and be subject to on-call and stand by duty.

  4. Be able to establish and maintain favorable interpersonal relations with co-workers, superiors (including District Directors) and District customers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Certification in wastewater treatment or water distribution systems (e.g., Water Distribution Operator or Wastewater Operator Certification).

  2. Understanding working safety procedures, including OSHA regulations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and materials regularly up to 25 lbs., frequently up to 50 lbs. and infrequently up to 75 lbs.; Kneeling, stooping, bending and squatting; close and distance vision; use of hands to finger, handle and feel objects, tools or controls; driving vehicles.

  • Comfortable working in confined spaces, near wastewater and in outdoor environments.

  • Ability to perform strenuous tasks, including bending, kneeling and climbing ladders.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY EQUIPMENT:

In general, it is necessary for the employee to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating special testing and analyzing equipment.  It is also imperative that the employee be able to maintain the mental capacity allowing the making of sound decisions following specific guidelines and the demonstration of intellectual capability to deal effectively with customers in person and on the phone and to make independent decisions to protect the customer’s health and sanitation and protect the District and other’s property in emergency situations.
